Carex is partnering with an industry leading consumer goods partner as they add an Electrical Engineer to their growing product engineering group! This is a hybrid on-site opportunity based at their Middleton, WI headquarters and will work collaboratively to support new and existing product design and innovation.

Summary

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for creating, designing, testing, supporting, and developing innovative electronic motor and control systems for both new and existing products. This role encompasses motors, controls, hardware, and software, with a focus on understanding customer requirements, applying quality tools, and driving continuous improvement across product and process design. The goal is to enhance the value, reliability, and performance of the product line, ultimately impacting sales and customer satisfaction. This position involves planning and managing product design engineering activities from conceptualization through testing and manufacturing, with a focus on motors, controls, and system interfaces.

What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Executive, Product Management, Engineering, and Channel Marketing, to develop new product concepts and enhance existing products.
  • Create and maintain systems architecture for product interaction with end-user controls and home/building systems, encompassing motors, controls, connected and IoT solutions, product interfaces, and communication protocols.
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives to identify root causes, develop solutions, and implement improvements in processes and products.
  • Lead electrical product and design engineering activities for multiple product lines, focusing on motorization, controls, software, and user and system interfaces.
  • Collaborate on the strategic development and integration of connected devices, including partnerships with voice control systems like Alexa and Google Home.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant codes and standards, including FCC and UL regulations.
  • Design products and components with safety, quality, durability, reliability, value, and ease of assembly as priorities.
  • Develop and plan both short- and long-term goals in alignment with company strategies.
  • Establish design specifications, material selection, and potential suppliers, with a focus on product design considerations.
  • Estimate project costs, support project justification, and recommend necessary materials and tooling.
  • Facilitate design reviews to integrate cross-functional feedback into final designs and enhance product manufacturability and quality.
  • Participate in new product development, enhancements, and stage-gate process teams.
  • Develop engineering solutions to address design-related customer field complaints.
  • Identify and implement cost-reduction measures to achieve financial objectives.
  • Prepare and submit capital requirements for product lines.
  • Maintain engineering documentation, including part and process specifications, drawings, and patents.
  • Interface with purchasing and suppliers to address and resolve compliance and quality issues.
  • Develop innovative designs aligned with product strategy and address patent infringement issues.
  • Manage engineering projects to align with timelines and priorities set by product management.
  • Interact and collaborate with stakeholders across marketing, quality, manufacturing, customer service, and suppliers.
  • Communicate directly with customers and consumers to support product improvement.

What You’ll Bring

  • Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
    • 3+ years of design engineering experience in consumer products or controls-related industry.
    • Experience in new product development and product design.
    • Familiarity with designing motors, controls, user interfaces, and software.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Strong conceptual and detail design skills.
    • Experience with A/C, DC, and battery-powered consumer/appliance motors.
    • Proficiency in systems design, including motors, controls, user interfaces, and system interfaces.
    • Experience with wired and wireless communication protocols (e.g., RS232, RS485, Z-wave, Zigbee, BTLE, WiFi).
    • Ability to work effectively with external resources to direct the development of new innovations.
    • Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks) and familiarity with drafting standards, electrical/circuit drawing standards, and software documentation.
    • Knowledge of current practices, standards, and trends in home and commercial building controls is preferred.
    • Strong data collection and database management skills.
    • Technical writing skills for memos, lab reports, and project updates.
    • General computer skills, including Excel, MS Word, Lotus Notes, MS Project, and Access.
    • Ability to prepare samples for testing and analysis.
